The hotel is located near Sentral very close to KTM Berhad and in a nice colonial area of KL. With bell boys in colonial attire and a beautiful lobby, the hotel sets your expectation for a grand stay, which it does meet to a large extent. We booked the Premier Suite which was massive at 92 sq metres. Super spacious living room with a dining table, work table, couch and still a lot of area to walk around in. Equally big was the bedroom with colonial posts on the bed, and a diwan along with a separate work table, with French windows bringing in the natural light and beautiful views. Both the living room and the bedroom had fridges with drinks inside. The bathroom while big, was a bit impractical with a bathtub in the centre and two wash basins on either side, but sharing one soap between them. There wasn’t much space to keep even the towel near the sinks. For such elegance, it was strange that the hotel does not give liquid handwash and expects guests to use a soap bar. While we were there, the towel rack (strangely placed in the toilet cubicle) was dangling (screw missing?) till the maintenance crew was called. There are a few areas where the hotel can improve. First, the wifi is terrible. I had work calls and the internet was highly unstable. When I called for help, they immediately brought a separate wifi device, indicating that they are aware of this being a regular problem. But even with that device, the internet was not stable. This can and should be fixed. Secondly, the service standard at breakfast can be improved. There are plenty of service staff but the pace is super slow. Perhaps the staff takes the colonial image a bit too seriously? Getting a coffee takes a long time, even when it is not crowded. Also, there aren’t many options for vegetarians, but the chef will thankfully make hot dishes if you ask. This too is not a big issue and can be solved by retraining the staff and with better menu selection. Overall a comfortable stay and nothing significant to complain of. But with just a few tweaks and perhaps a little more focus on maintenance and service, the hotel can definitely receive the 5 stars that it was built to get.

This is another hotel where you can get a taste of colonialism. Staff helped us with our bags. People at the front of the hotel opened doors. The breakfast buffet was just alright though. There wasn't anything great about it but there wasn't anything bad about either.

Lovely 5* hotel in the heart of the city. Very posh, attentive staff, lovely rooms. All facilities you could need are here. Food is plentiful with huge variety. 2 restaurants, one buffet and one formal a la carte. Tried both, very satisfied. Limited TV programmes only 2 in English Boomberg and NG. TV in bathroom.

A trip back to colonial Malaya

The Tower Wing of the Hotel Majestic in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was constructed in 2008. This new 15-story wing was built on an adjacent vacant land parcel directly south of the original complex. The original Majestic Wing, which dates to 1932, was restored and now offers 47 rooms. The hotel, part of the Marriott Bonvoy Autograph Collection, combines historical charm with modern amenities, making it a unique destination for travelers. I just completed a trip to Kuala Lumpur and stayed at the hotel for 3 weeks. The hotel has classic British Malaya colonial charm. The design of the buildings as well as the official dress of the staff are meant to evoke an earlier time in the history of Malaysia. Traditional high tea is served in the original building, which provides the traveler with a very special feeling of the rich history of the place. The hotel has two dining venues, a spa, and two bars, one of which has live music in the evening. Classic American jazz from the 1930’s & 1940’s can be heard played continuously in all interior areas and provides a nice touch to the unique feel of the space. Hotel staff are omnipresent and always willing to help guests, even to the point of occasionally providing inaccurate information instead of saying “I don’t know, but I will find out and get back to you.” This behavior is primarily cultural and is commonly found throughout Southeast Asia. Some of the staff are immigrants from surrounding countries (e.g., Bangladesh, Burma, Indonesia, Nepal, etc.) and are not as familiar with Kuala Lumpur as native-born Malaysians. I found that the food served at buffet restaurant (Contango) was quite good with a nice selection of Western and Asian menu options (e.g., Malaysian, Chinese, and Japanese). The Colonial Café serves a la carte food for lunch and dinner, which I found somewhat disappointing. To me, the Café’s attempt to recreate classic British colonial and traditional Malaysian food felt flat and several of the local dishes (Old-Style Hainanese Chicken Rice Ball & Classic Cantonese Seafood Kway Teow) were average at best. Great local food is available all over the city and one can find much better options elsewhere. That said, you can’t beat the convenience of having food served right in the hotel. I had 3 massages at the spa in the hotel and was more than satisfied by the price and the quality of service. If you have the time, please feel free to indulge yourself in this luxury. My conclusion to this review of the hotel is as follows: If you want the authentic feel of classic colonial Malaya in the historic center of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, then this hotel is for you. There is nothing quite like it in the city.
